On behalf of the St Austell Chamber of Commerce, we fully support the proposals for the Carlyon Bay development.  It’s a vital opportunity for St Austell and one that we must not let slip through our fingers. 

Let’s get real about this: £250 million of private investment at a time when some businesses are on their knees; more than 500 construction jobs and the same number of permanent ones once the resort is up and running; a strong commitment to Cornwall College for apprenticeships and training courses providing young local people with a future career on their doorstep and a quality resort for all of us to be proud of. And let’s not forget, the only beach promenade on the south Cornish coast from Plymouth to Penzance! 

I know what the shopkeepers and businesses of St Austell want – they want a vibrant town centre full of new visitors who will help to turn its fortunes around after years of depression and misery.  This development is the best thing that could happen to this area and it’s our responsibility to make sure our voices are heard by contacting Cornwall Council and telling them why we think this development is a win win situation for St Austell Bay.

On Monday 21st February the Chamber tried out a new type of monthly meeting in the form of a Food & Wine Tasting Evening.  Taking part were St Austell Brewery Visitor Centre,  The Duchy Smoked Fish Co & Cornwall Catering Company.  The large turnout enjoyed enjoyed an evening of gasteric delights with a chance to network amonst themselves.  Watch this space!

M & Co are putting on a Fashion Show called High Days & Holidays  at The Cliff Head Hotel Friday 1st of April at 7.00pm.  Tickets are £5 in aid of RLNI Life Guard Appeal & STAK.  Tickets on sale at M & Co

The Eden Project Cafe opened its doors on Thursday 17th February.  There will be a range of activities at the low-carbon & sustainable cafe including a unique personalised book swop scheme, the best of local food, music & art as well as community projects & green living.  The Cafe will open everyday with late night opening on Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays.

Congratulations go to The White River Cinema after winning the award for the “UK Independent Cinema of the Year” at a prestigious ceremony in London.  Mark Williams, General manager collected the award & he paid tribute to the staff & also to the people of St Austell & surrounding areas for their continued support.

It is hoped that the resurfacing of Fore Street will begin in the spring following consultations.  This is our last chance to see this project through.  If this fails funding will be lost & Fore Street will stay as it is.  Below are artists impressions if the finished job.  Please give your blessing to this project & the continued improvement of our Town Centre.

 The Debate on the Future of St Austell

This debate which will take place on Tuesday the 18^th May 2010 and will be run by the St. Austell & District Chamber of Commerce & Industry as part of ”Cornwall Business Week”. 

The aim of the debate is to invite a broad selection of people from business, the community and local government to explore the enormous potential of St Austell and the surrounding parishes, which is currently attracting exciting development projects. 

The venue is the White River Cinema St Austell  starting at 11am and finishing by 2.20pm after a buffet lunch.  

The format will be: the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Paul Scott will welcome every one and introduce the speakers then hand over to the debate chairman James Staunton for Question Time. 

There will be four 10 minute presentations and then a chance for the audience to ask questions of a panel of experts.

b)     Tourism – Sam Weller – Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate 

c)     The impact and timing of the ECO Town – Samhi Sawiris – Eco-bos 

d)     The Market and Coastal Town Initiative (MCTi). A forward looking study in to how this area should develop over the next 20 years. -

Question Time The speakers will join James Staunton, the chair, to allow questions and comments to be taken from the audience. This session will last about one hour after which a buffet will be served.
